Welcome to the Engineering Division

The Engineering Division is dedicated to giving support and guidance for the administration and construction of a high quality infrastructure that provides a safe environment while at the same time keeping a balance between the interests of the private and public sectors.

plansEngineering's primary focus is on the engineering, coordination, and inspection of the City's capital improvement infrastructure projects for the year. This year we will be handling 11 projects with a price tag of $5,200,000. Our highly-skilled staff engineered $500,000 of these projects. Projects that are completed this year are the Grove, Latty and Wilhelm Street Resurfacing, SR 281 Waterline Replacement, and the replacement of waterlines on Ravine and Euclid Avenue. Projects currently under construction are the Group 2 Sanitary Sewer Improvements, Upground Reservoir, Enhancement Project, SR 111 / Cleveland Avenue Pavement Rehab, Clinton and Fourth Signal Project, Elliott Road Water and Sanitary Sewer, the 2007 Street Repair and Resurfacing Replacement, the 2007 Pavement Marking Program, and another phase of curb replacement on Holgate Avenue. Projects currently under the design phase are the Group 2 Express Sewer Improvements, MS4 Storm Water Management Program, SR 66 North Corridor, SR 66 South Embankment Rehab and waterline replacement work on Hilton Avenue, Kettenring Drive, East River Drive, Carpenter Road and Johnson Circle.

us 24Another very important activity of the Engineering Division is to work closely with ODOT District 1 in helping them with their planning needs engineering, coordination, and inspection of the and various permits for city utility services or street access. The US 24 Fort to Port Project has been a 17 year effort for these improvements. Many difference projects make up this endeavor.

Engineering also works closely with developers within the community. We help them access the City's utilities and street systems. Currently we are working with Wal-Mart, the new Kohl’s, the new elementary school, the new Defiance Dental Clinic on Stadium Drive, and the new Tim Horton’s development on N. Clinton Street. Also, two new subdivisions have just been completed. They are the Maumee River Crossing off of West High Street, and Stone Gate Condominiums between off of Chippewa Drive, Villas of Wayne Trial (42 units) on Village Lane and the Plummer’s 2nd Addition off of South Jackson Avenue. This equates to 70 additional residential building sites within the City.

Also, the first phase, of Ohio’s largest industrial park subdivision, R & L Enterprises has just been completed. The total acreage is 130.860 acres, with 16 lots.

Another very important activity of the Engineering Division is to work closely with our citizens in helping them with their needs and various permits for city utility services or street access.

Engineering works very closely with all of the other City Divisions. All of the previously mentioned work could not be achieved without their help. And in turn, we help them with their work as needed. This sharing of work skills, knowledge, and abilities between the various City Divisions is what makes the City's Service Divisions work so well for our citizens.

All of the projects, permits, etc., need to have a final home, so our staff also spends time updating all of the City's maps and the GIS system. They are used daily.

To perform all of this work on a yearly basis requires the efforts of a very highly skilled, technical, and organized engineering staff. The staff works hard at taking a proactive, behind-the-scenes approach to project management so that the work and construction goes on as seamlessly and effortlessly as possible to those affected. We believe in making Defiance "A Great Place to Live".
