Mayor Bob Armstrong was elected in November, 2011 to an unprecedented third consecutive term having been initially elected in 2003 and re-elected in November 2007. As Mayor of Defiance, he is responsible for approximately 165 employees, a $43 Million dollar budget and the health and welfare of over 17,000 citizens. Bob Armstrong is no stranger to local politics. He served as First Ward City Councilman from 1996 through the year 2000 and was a candidate for Mayor in the year 2000. As a member of City Council, Bob Armstrong served as Building and Lands Chairman and was a member of the Water Committee and Utilities Committee. As Mayor the City had its largest carry-over in Defiance’s history: $3.1 million in the year 2006.
Mayor Armstrong retired from GM Powertrain after serving as a Supervisor working in material control, shipping and scheduling during his 27 years of employment. While employed at GM Powertrain, he earned 550 credited hours of leadership and specialty training through the GM University and the GM Skill Center. After high school, Mayor Armstrong graduated from Andrew Toledo Barber School and practiced barbering for thirteen years before going to GM Powertrain.
Mayor Bob Armstrong has a very strong community background. He holds memberships in the following organizations: Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, Elks Lodge 147 (life member), Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge, and the V.F.W. Post 3360. Civic memberships, past and present, include: Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce, Defiance Rotary, The Historic Homes Association, Friends of the Library, The Defiance County Humane Society. Neighborhood and Youth involvement includes serving as Past President and Board Member of the Village of Berkshire Neighborhood Association, Defiance High School Athletic Boosters and various youth baseball and football coaching.
Bob has been married to his wife Sharon (Andrist) Armstrong for over 45 years and has a strong commitment to family. Bob and Sharon have two children, Deborah (Armstrong) Mattocks and Michael Armstrong and have seven grandchildren with one grandchild deceased. The Mayor is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mayor Armstrong’s hobbies include golf and bowling and he is an avid fan of the Defiance Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns (even if they aren’t winning).
