Snow & Ice Removal

Residents are required to keep walks adjacent to their property clear of snow and ice. City Ordinance requires all walks to be cleared within 24 hours after a snowfall.

The Street Division policy for snow removal is as follows: During snowfall up to 2" all primary arteries, bridges and school zones will be salted. Between 2"-4" these same arteries will be plowed. Beyond 4" all city streets will be plowed.

Any plowing for the central business district will take place after 11:00 p.m. The Mayor will declare a parking ban on downtown streets until all snow on the streets has been cleared. During normal work hours, the snow will be hauled from the downtown area.

The City budgets $38,000 annually for the purchase of 900 tons of rock salt. It takes approximately 15 hours to plow all residential streets, 5 hours to plow the downtown area and its parking lots, and another 10 hours to haul the snow away.
